GEA Member finalist in National OHS Awards
8th February, 2008
Thirty individuals and organisations from around Australia were officially announced today as National Safe Work Australia Awards finalists.
“The National Safe Work Australia Awards are the premier national OHS awards in Australia and promote continuous improvement in OHS by recognising excellence at the government, organisational and individual level”, said Australian Safety and Compensation Council Chairman Mr Bill Scales.
“I would like to offer my sincere congratulations and thanks to the finalists. This group of finalists are a tremendous example of some of Australia’s dedicated OHS ambassadors, who each and every day are committed to building, promoting and encouraging safer workplaces in Australia.
Finalists for the Awards are winners of OHS awards in their jurisdiction.
GEA member John Holland Group is recognised for their innovative Occupational Health & Safety and Rehabilitation Manual.
John Holland developed the Occupational Health & Safety and Rehabilitation (OHS&R) Manual to fill the need for a safety system that was effective, simplified, relevant and integrated into business operations.
Being a national company, John Holland developed the OHS&R Manual without specific regard to state, federal or industry specific legislation. Instead, it has adopted a best practice approach, which ensures the relevant legislation across Australia is met and sets standards beyond the minimum legislative requirements.
The manual identifies 36 safety-critical activities and details the level of safety knowledge required of each person conducting them. The manual provides guidelines as to when each safety-critical activity needs to be undertaken, by which roles, to what standards and where to find more detailed information.
The manual was developed in consultation with key stakeholders representing each role thus creating ownership of the manual across the company.
An independent judging panel will consider each finalist’s award submission before deciding on a final winner for each of the five categories.
The 2007 Safe Work Australia Awards winners will be announced at an official ceremony to be held at Parliament House on the evening of April 28 2008.
The awards are a key initiative of the Australian Safety and Compensation Council.
